Cam Cavitt wins GOP primary for 106th state House

Cam Cavitt

ALPENA — It appears the field is set for the November election and to see who will replace State Representative Sue Allor at the end of the year.

During Tuesday’s primary election, it seems Republican Cam Cavitt ended up holding off Geyer Balog and Larry Hull for the right to face Democrat candidate Marie Fielder in the general election.

As of 2 a.m. Wednesday, Cavitt led his challengers with 7,405 votes. Balog had 5,044, while Hull had 3,226.

Cavit was leading in Alcona, Cheboygan, Oscoda, and Presque Isle counties. Balog earned the most votes in Alpena and Montmorency counties.

Results are unofficial until they are certified by the board of canvassers.

Fielder was unopposed in the primary election Tuesday and advances to the general election.

Cavitt, who is from Cheboygan County, said he is thankful for the support he has received and is humbled so many checked the box on the ballot next to his name.

“I am so excited,” Cavitt said. “The people really came out in Alcona, Cheboygan and even Oscoda and I really appreciate that and I will never forget about them.”

Cavitt, Balog, and Hull continued to campaign until election day, trying to garner enough votes to move on to November. A late campaign push by Cavitt in Alpena County helped to squeeze enough votes from it to ensure his win.

Now that the primary is in the rearview mirror, Cavitt said he wants to keep the momentum going and will shift his focus to defeating Fielder and winning the seat in Lansing. He said if elected, he will get to work in helping create policy for the residents in his district, and around the state.

” Now I’m ready to move on and beat Marie Fielder,” he said. “I’m 100% laser focused on that. I’m grateful for all the support but there is still work that needs to be done.”

The winner in November will represent the new 106th state House District — drawn for the first time by the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission — includes all of Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency, Alcona and Cheboygan counties, and the northern half of Oscoda County.

Allor, a Republican from Wolverine, will reach her term limit at the end of the year after being elected in November 2016.
