ALPENA — Police on Friday left unanswered questions surrounding the death of a 2-year-old girl brought to MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena deceased on the same morning the hospital went into lockdown.

Multiple police agencies coordinated to find and arrest a suspect related to the child’s death, police said in a news release on Friday afternoon.

Police withheld the names of both the child and the suspect and did not specify the child’s relationship to the suspect.

The release did not indicate the child’s cause of death or whether police consider it a suspicious death. Police also did not say whether anyone else was injured related to the incident.

Police said they found the child’s residence in Alcona County and arrested the suspect in the same county.

Police did not say if they arrested the subject at the child’s house.

Police did not say what time they initially responded to the incident, but MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena went into lockdown around 10 a.m. Friday morning “for the safety of our patients and our staff,” said Millie Jezior, public relations manager for MyMichigan Health.

Jezior would not say whether police ordered the lockdown.

During the lockdown, patients with standing appointments could enter, but visitors were turned away, and staff could only enter with an ID, Jezior said.

The hospital lifted its lockdown at about 1:30 p.m., saying administrators believed there was no longer a threat to the public.

At no time was an active shooter at the hospital, according to the release, which referenced rumors to the contrary.

Police did not say whether the public was ever in danger related to the incident.

Alpena Community College also closed its campus around 12:30 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution” after administrators learned of an incident on Friday morning, said Jay Walterreit, ACC director of public information.

Walterreit said an ACC official who heard a rumor about the hospital closure contacted police, who told college administrators that, as of late Friday morning, a suspect in an incident related to the hospital had not yet been apprehended but was not perceived to be a threat to the Alpena area.

In a campus-wide memo sent around 12:30 p.m., ACC administrators encouraged employees to leave campus immediately.

No city buildings went into lockdown, according to Mayor Matt Waligora, nor did the Alpena County Courthouse, according to an employee.

Police continue to recover evidence related to the incident

First Lt. John Grimshaw, commander of the Alpena Post, would not answer questions about the incident. Police will release more information next week, he said.

The arrest involved a coordinated effort by the Michigan State Police-Alpena Post, the MSP West Branch Post, the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office, the Oscoda Township Police Department, the U.S. Forest Service, Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, and members of the MSP Emergency Support Team.
