ALPENA — Alpena residents can expect large aircraft overhead as the annual Northern Strike military training exercise returns to the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center in early August.
About 7,400 participants from 19 states as well as Latvia, the United Kingdom, and Canada will train at the CRTC and Camp Grayling Maneuvering Training Center Aug. 6-20.
Training exercises will include the use of A-10 Thunderbolt II, MC-12, MC-130, and KC-135 aircraft, some of which may fly Alpena's skies during the training.
According to a Michigan National Guard representative, Northern Strike brings about $30 million to northern Michigan's economy through military pay, travel, and local spending each year.
