ALPENA — A man who sexually assaulted a child will spend four decades in prison thanks to the help of Alpena-area police.

Brandon Mauk, found guilty in May of 13 counts of abusing a child in Iosco County, was sentenced on July 11 to 39 to 80 years in prison, with credit for 368 days served.

Huron Undercover Narcotics Team detectives caught Mauk last July after he fled from the Tawas City area.

HUNT officers found Mauk hiding in a tent in a desolate beach area near Alpena after he spent more than a week kayaking north to evade arrest.

The Alpena County Sheriff's Office drone team and the Michigan State Police-Alpena Post canine team assisted in Mauk's arrest.

Judge David Riffel in Iosco County sentenced Mauk well above the 25-year minimum sentence for assaulting the child.
