Police: Rogers City threatening comment handled correctly

Rogers City Area Schools responded appropriately when students reported a possible threatening comment made by another student last week, Rogers City Police Chief Jamie Meyer said on Thursday.

Students at Rogers City High School on Thursday overheard another student making an inappropriate comment that could be viewed as threatening in a classroom setting. The students reported the remark to school officials and the school resource officer, Meyer said.

He would not clarify the type of threat the student was alleged to have made or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

School administrators and the school resource officer investigated the threat rigorously, speaking to students who heard the comment and the student who made it, Meyer said.

He would not say whether the school took disciplinary action against the student in question but said he believed the school body was not in danger in relation to the comment.

School officials notified parents of the incident shortly after the end of the school day via an electronic messaging system, asking parents to remind students of the seriousness of even joking comments that could be heard as a threat.

Meyer said school officials handled the incident correctly and commended the district for communicating quickly with parents.
