Alpena area saw higher temperatures throughout May

ALPENA -- Despite some severe weather in neighboring counties late last month, the Alpena area saw higher temperatures and very little rain, according to weather officials.
An EF-3 tornado cell hit Gaylord on May 20 and soon after the National Weather Service said the tornado lifted and moved toward Presque Isle County, which led to sizable hail failing and damage to some residents' homes and cars among other things.
"There were plenty of damage reports out that way," National Weather Service Meteorologist Sean Christensen said. "Some people had some trees down and there were some straight line winds. I know a couple of people reported siding off and then of course, you know, windows broken on cars and stuff like that."
The high temperature for the month in Alpena happened twice in a row when the thermometer climbed to 91 degrees on May 30 and 31. The lowest recorded temperature was on May 8 when it dropped to 28 degrees.
The average temperature of 56.8 degrees eclipsed the long-term May average of 53.4 degrees. Alongside the average monthly temperature, the long-term low temperature average was beaten by 3.1 degrees.
There were five days that exceeded 80 degrees and with the extra two days that went above 90, the month ended with a high temperature average that surpassed the long-term average by 3.8 degrees.
The Alpena area received only rain with a total of 3.68 inches in May. The most precipitation in one day was on May 14 with 1.59 inches. The rain went just a little above the long-term average, with 0.90 inches more than usual.
According to the National Weather Service, Northeast Michigan should expect cooler temperatures than usual and clear weather with some slight rain in the next week.
