ALPENA — The Alpena High girls track team is excited and ready to have a great season this spring. This is Trevor Roznowski’s first year as the girls head coach and he is thrilled to see how the girls can perform in 2022.

“We have a super dedicated group of girls this year, they are excited to be on the track every day, they are always looking for new ways to get better, and they really like to compete,” Roznowski said.

The girls team this year is highlighted by several highly talented seniors and juniors, but also includes some very hard working sophomores and freshmen.

“We are expecting big years from our great group of senior leaders like Madi Szymanski, Grace Mitchell, Allie Urlaub, Fran Treiliha, Veronica Zaborney and Maggie Thayer. That group of seniors sets the tone for all of the underclassmen,” Roznowski said.

Roznowski will depend on many of those seniors to step up this year, but nobody more than senior Madi Szymanski. In her final year as a Wildcat, Szymanski is expected to be a standout athlete on the track and be the leader of the team.

Besides Szymanski, the long distance team also includes Grace Mitchell, Emma Dickins, and Samantha Zolnierek.

Zolnerick is one athlete Roznowski hopes will have a breakout year and anticipates she will take a step forward this spring.

The girl’s sprint team has an assortment of girls consisting of Keslee Jex, Fran Treiliha, Allie Urlaub, Chloe Lawrence, and Tiffany Tessmer.

Throwing for the girls this year will be a pair of juniors that plan to be the leaders in Natalie Kopraski and Taeghan Werle. There is also a pair of sophomores that will be throwing for their first year in Braylen Durfee and Sydney Hitzelberger.

Doing the long jump for Alpena this year will also be Urlaub, who has already been outstanding at her first couple of meets. Thayer and Zaborney have also been two solid athletes for the long jump so far.

Roznowski is confident going into this season and expecting big things from his team.

“We will be a team to watch out for in the Big North Conference. We have a lot of strong individual competitors who will put together a great season. Once we come together as a team I’m excited to see how we stack up against the rest of the conference,” Roznowski said.
