Man captured by Alpena-area police guilty of child sexual assault
ALPENA ― A man captured by the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team after he fled from the Tawas area in a kayak was last week found guilty of sexually assaulting a child.
An Iosco County jury found Brandon Mauk guilty of 13 counts of abusing the child between 2019 and 2021, beginning around the child’s ninth birthday.
HUNT detectives found Mauk hiding in a tent in a desolate beach area near Alpena in July after he spent more than a week kayaking north to evade arrest.
The Alpena County Sheriff’s Office drone team and the Michigan State Police-Alpena Post canine team assisted in Mauk’s arrest.
Mauk faces a minimum 25-year sentence.
