ALPENA ― Students at several Northeast Michigan schools will be safer thanks to a $120,000 piece of $10 million in grants announced today to improve the safety and security at select Michigan schools.

Hillman Community Schools, Atlanta Community Schools, and St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic School in Rogers City will receive $54,000, $24,000, and $45,581 respectively as part of a state Competitive School Safety Grant Program.

The three school bodies were among 150 chosen from 336 eligible applicants. Law enforcement representatives helped the state choose grant recipients, prioritizing grant proposals that focused on securing exterior access points at school buildings, according to a news release from the office of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
