Lake trout harvest limits reduced

ALPENA — Some Lake Huron anglers may take home fewer lake trout and splake this summer after a decision last week by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission.
To compensate for last year’s harvest, which exceeded a limit mandated in a state agreement with tribal leaders, anglers fishing in the northern portion of Lake Huron – roughly Rogers City and north – this summer may possess two lake trout or splake, in any combination, per day instead of three.
The Natural Resources Commission did not accept a suggested amendment that would have allowed anglers to keep four lake trout or splake per day in the lower portion of Lake Huron instead of three – including in and around Thunder Bay – to offset the reduction in the upper portion of the lake.
The commission’s Thursday decision went into effect on Friday and lasts the duration of the season, through Sept. 30.
