Eat fresh fish safely
ALPENA — Anglers hoping to land a prize for their dinner plate can get advice from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on potential chemical hazards in the fish they catch.
The 2022 DNR Eat Safe Fish guides, released on Monday, report safe eating amounts based on tests of chemicals of concern found in locally caught fish, reported by county.
The DNR cautions anglers to limit consumption of bass, pike, walleye, and other fish caught in the Thunder Bay River and surrounding lakes because of the presence of mercury and other chemicals detected in fish filets in past years.
Those planning to consume their catch can find species-specific portion recommendations in the 2022 Eat Safe Fish Guide, found at Michigan.gov/EatSafeFish (click “Find your area) or by calling 800-648-6942.
