ALPENA — A little rain couldn’t do much to slow down Alpena’s Cooper Bright or Elijah Allen on Wednesday.

Bright, a senior sprinter and Allen, a junior hurdler, claimed conference titles in the 400 dash and 300 hurdles respectively during the Big North Championships at Thunder Bay Junior High School.

Bright, who was the BNC champion in the 400 dash last season, made it look easy on Wednesday, crossing the line in 50.32. His time was a touch shy of two seconds faster than Ben Habers of Traverse City West.

Allen similarly left his opponents behind, crossing the line in 42.65 seconds, more than a full second ahead of West’s Sam Schutte.

On a day when clouds gave way to a steady rain in the late afternoon, Alpena’s boys and girls teams finished fourth and fifth respectively on their home track. Traverse City West claimed the team titles in both the girls and boys divisions.

On the girls side, senior distance runner Madi Szymanski finished second in the 1,600 run (5:14.82) and third in the 3.200 run (11:32.70). Traverse City Central’s Julia Flynn claimed the conference titles in both events. She also won the 800 run and was part of Central’s win in the 1,600 relay.
