Alpena High School alum tapped for Detroit Archdiocese

An Alpena man will serve as the 31st auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Pope Francis named Archbishop Paul Fitzpatrick Russell to the Detroit post, with an inauguration ceremony scheduled for July 7 in Detroit, the Archdiocese announced Monday.

An auxiliary bishop aids the diocesan bishop in the pastoral care of an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

Russell, 63, graduated from Alpena High School in 1977. He has worked in Rome, Ethiopia, Turkey, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Peru, among other places.
