Alpena recently experienced a sanitary sewer overflow into two basements in the city. The overflow was caused by an unauthorized item being in the sewer system, which plugged the pumps at the lift station. The event led to approximately 1,000 gallons to backflow and lasted for about five hours. All sewage was contained and did not reach the environment, according to a press release.
