ALPENA -- Removing bird feeders could help protect backyard feathered friends from avian influenza, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources suggests.
Officials report incidences of the sickness, also called bird flu, in several counties throughout Michigan. The flu virus can sicken and kill all birds, but domestic flocks, waterfowl, raptors, and scavengers are most susceptible, and bluejays, crows, and ravens are at high risk, the DNR said.
Temporary removal of feeders outside homes could help prevent the spread of the virus, the DNR advised.
Those continuing to use feeders should clean them once a week and remove fallen seed from below feeders to discourage bird congregation.
Unusual bird deaths should be reported to the DNR at 517-336-5030.
