August primary races could reshape Alpena County Board of Commissioners

ALPENA — It appears there will be several contested races that could reshape the Alpena County Board of Commissioners in the August primary in Northeast Michigan, according to candidate filings available on Tuesday.
The filing deadline for candidates to be placed on the ballot in the Aug. 2 primary was Tuesday.
A primary election is an election used either to narrow the field of candidates for a given elective office or to determine the nominees for political parties in advance of a general election.
The Alpena area will also have a new legislator in the state House who will replace State Rep. Sue Allor, a Republican from Wolverine, who has reached her term limit, and 36th District State Sen. Jim Stamas, a Republican from Midland, who also reached his term limit.
Below is a list of commissioners’ races as they currently stand. A candidate has until Friday to remove themselves from the ballot.
If more than one candidate from the same party is running for any seat, the winner of the most votes will advance to the November general election to face off against the winner in the opposing party’s primary.
If only one candidate from a party is running, that candidate automatically advances to November, as long as he or she earns at least one vote in August.
If only one candidate has filed for a particular race, he or she will automatically win the seat in November, provided he or she earns at least one vote in both August and November, unless they are challenged by an independent.
