ALPENA — The Alpena Community College softball team took a commanding win in game one with a final score of 10-2, but fell short against Delta in the second game of a Friday doubleheader after a 4-0 loss.

The Lumberjacks started off game one hot by taking a 3-0 lead early in the first inning. Jade Schultz and Avery Zipp both got on base due to errors from the Delta defense, which was then followed up by an RBI single from Paige Wooden and an RBI groundout by Chloe Hentkowski.

Alpena led 3-0 all the way until the fifth inning when Breya Domke crushed a massive two-run home run into left-centerfield giving Alpena a 5-0 lead.

Delta answered back at after recording two runs also in the fifth inning after a couple of ACC errors.

In the next inning, the Lumberjacks rallied together five runs, which all started from a leadoff single by Madison Wilkinson. That led to two more singles, including an RBI by Zipp. Domke continued her amazing game by hitting a three-run home run to give the Lumberjacks the win in game one.

“She has a nice strong swing and the biggest thing for every hitter is to get their pitch and she’s been having great pitch selection at the plate,” Alpena coach Christin Sobeck said.

Schultz was a significant part of getting the win, after pitching a complete game only allowing two runs on five hits and giving up only two walks.

Game two began very differently after the Lumberjacks’ offense started off cold. The Delta offense was just the opposite, scoring their first two batters of the game to take an early a 2-0 lead.

Although Alpena’s offense struggled, Schultz settled in on the mound, pitching two scoreless innings until the Delta offense got going again after scoring another run in the top of the fourth inning.

Schultz continued her solid pitching performance through seven innings and only gave up one run the rest of the game. That run came in the seventh inning after a single back up the middle.

“Jade did a very nice job keeping the hitters off-balance, she allowed a couple of hard hits but our defense is always there to back her up,” Sobeck said.

The Lumberjacks started a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning after loading up the bases with nobody out. Unfortunately, they left all of the baserunners stranded.

“You have to give props to their pitcher and she had the tendency to hit that low outside corner and we didn’t get to that pitch as much as I would have liked to,” Sobeck said.

ACC takes on Schoolcraft today at home and Sobeck anticipates it to be a difficult yet exciting game.

“They’re going to be some really good competition, we just have to go after them and keep playing Lumberjack ball,” she said.
