ALPENA — Alpena Community College Fine Arts students have been hard at work creating unique, original pieces that the public can come see on Friday, May 6.

“An Evening With the Arts” will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at ACC’s Art + Design Gallery in the Fine Arts Center, featuring artwork from all of ACC’s Fine Arts students.

“We are very excited to be able to have all of the students show work in the exhibition,” said Fine Arts instructor Brian Schorn. “All of our courses are represented.”

The artwork will be from about 50 students, in a variety of media, from the following classes: Painting 1, CGI 1 and 2, Sculpture 2, Ceramics 1 and 2, Design 1 and 2, and Photography 1.

The free event is open to the public and will include refreshments and live music by Todd Artley and Natanael Macean.

“It’s fun, and you get to create anything,” ACC art student Alexis Lask said of participating in Sculpture 2. “You can make people smile with it, and you can be creative.”

She made a found object sculpture from a cement cylinder and a variety of items, bringing them to life as a face that looks thoroughly unamused, yet non-threatening, wearing a bright flowered bucket hat. It might be a fun addition to a garden.

Lask is in Painting 1, Sculpture 2, Ceramics 1, and Design 1. She will have a variety of pieces in the exhibition.

Another piece she created is an abstract wire sculpture of a dragon.

“He wanted it abstract,” Lask explained of her instructor, Joe Donna. “It’s just loosely designed, and I spray-painted it. That took me a long time to do. It was very meticulous. Probably a month or so of class time.”

Lask is working toward her associate’s degree in Fine Arts at ACC. She’s not sure what her future holds, but it most likely involves continuing with her art in some way.

Schorn and Donna are the Fine Arts instructors at ACC.

The exhibition will remain on display through May 13. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Fine Arts Center is located at 665 Johnson St., Alpena.
