ALPENA — At least one new face will join the Alcona County Board of Commissioners and two new commissioners will join the Montmorency County Board of Commissioners at the conclusion of the current election cycle.
Tuesday was the deadline for candidates to file to run in the Aug. 2 primary for the county seats, and races in two of the county’s five districts will be competitive. Republicans will square off against one another in August in Districts 2 and District 5.
Only two of the five commissioner races in Montmorency County are contested, with Republicans squaring off against each other for the District 2 and District 4 seats on the Montmorency County Board of Commissioners.
Winners of the primary will represent their party in the November general election.
If only one candidate from a party runs for a particular seat, that candidate automatically advances to the November election, as long as he or she earns at least one vote in August.
If only one candidate total has filed for a particular race, he or she will automatically win the seat in November — provided he or she earns at least one vote in both August and November — unless challenged by someone running as an independent or a third-party candidate.
It appears the makeup of the Alcona County board will remain overwhelmingly red, as only one Democratic candidate, Joe Lukasiewicz, filed to run in the primary election. Lukasiewicz will square off against incumbent Carolyn Brummund for the District 3 seat in November. Neither candidate has an opponent in August.
