Burning greenery created a large smoke cloud but caused little damage when fire burned part of a hedge on the east side of Holy Cross Cemetery in Alpena, across Washington Avenue from Evergreen Cemetery, on Friday afternoon.

Alpena Fire Department firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly. The cause of the fire is unknown, but workers had dug a grave nearby several hours before the fire, according to AFD Capt. Andy Marceau.
