ALPENA -- More than a half dozen Alpena High School athletes were honored by the Big North Conference for their play during the 2021-22 winter sports season.
The Wildcats had eight players - four each in girls basketball and hockey - honored by the conference.
All-Big North selections for boys basketball will be released at a later date as Cadillac is still playing in the Division 2 state tournament.
On the hardwood, Alpena seniors Allie Urlaub and Franciska Treihila, and sophomores Avery Dubey and Reese Wisniewski were honored. Urlaub and Dubey were both named to the second team and Treihila and Wisniewski earned honorable mentions.
Alpena went 14-10 this season and won a district title for the first time since 2001.
"I'm very proud of all four of these young ladies. They were our top scorers as well as defenders throughout the entire season. The BNC saw that and rewarded their talent. The BNC has some talented players and these girls got the recognition they deserved," Alpena coach Laura Dubey said.
Alpena senior Matt Thompson and juniors Anden Marceau, Aidan Schultz and Cam Young were honored after helping Alpena win a regional championship and finish with a 14-14 record.
Marceau and Thompson were named to the All-Big North first team and Young and Schultz earned honorable mentions.
