HARRISVILLE -- More phone scams than usual have plagued Northeast Michigan residents in recent weeks, police warn.

The Alcona County Sheriff's Office cautions residents to never share social security numbers, bank account numbers, or other personal information with a stranger as residents report an increase in scams, especially those targeted at older adults.

Callers may promise the victim money from a sweepstakes win, threaten arrest for overdue taxes, pretend to be a grandchild in distress, or pose as an employee of a local bank.

Police recommend hanging up on such callers and not answering calls from any unrecognized number on caller ID.
