Habitat ReStore seeking repurposed art items for silent auction

ALPENA — Calling all creative crafters! Do you have a vision for transforming old things into fresh, new works of art?

Then Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan wants you to create repurposed or refurbished art pieces to be donated to the ReStore for its Repurpose for a Reason Auction on Saturday, April 23.

Organizer Jenny Nestell thought having the repurpose auction right around Earth Day made a lot of sense.

“We decided that Earth Day would be a good day for that,” said Nestell, community outreach coordinator for Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan.

Earth Day is on Friday, April 22, the day before the silent auction.

All proceeds will go toward Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan programs. The silent auction will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We’re looking for do-it-yourselfers, flea market flippers, artists, to come in and either pick out a piece from us, or, if from wherever, to upcycle and then donate,” Nestell explained. “Use your imagination.”

Art could be a repainted or refinished dresser, a truck tailgate turned into the back of a bench, an abandoned lamp refurbished into a whimsical piece to dress up an end table, colorful mismatched dining chairs, or anything you can dream up.

Artists may register and donate as many art pieces as they wish. You can register in person at the offices, now located in the same building as the ReStore. Art pieces need to be finished and returned to the ReStore by April 18. Finished art pieces can be dropped off at the ReStore, 2630 U.S.-23 South, Alpena. If a potential artist wants to seek out items within the ReStore to take home to refurbish and upcycle, they will be allowed to do so free of charge, Nestell said.

This is the first Repurpose for a Reason event Habitat has held.

“Repurpose for a Reason is a great local fundraiser where local artists of all ages are encouraged to refurbish, renovate, and upcycle Habitat for Humanity ReStore items and then donate such revitalized art items to the ReStore for a silent auction fundraiser,” Nestell said in a pamphlet about the event.

The event will also feature raffles, thanks to donations from busineses in the Alpena area.

All proceeds from the auction will be used to help fund local programs for veterans, families and seniors, including Critical Home Repair and Aging in Place.
