ALPENA — A water main break flooded Ford Avenue at Spratt Street this morning.

Suez, the city’s utility contractor, and city crews were on the scene this morning.

“We don’t expect any collapses” in the roadway, said Shannon Smolinski, the city’s engineering assistant. “It’s a smaller main.”

She said the break was probably caused by the weather.

“It’s a natural part of water infrastructure for freezing and thawing to cause these problems,” she said.

Smolinski said crews have done a lot of work on the city’s water infrastructure, so such breaks happen less often than in the past.

Smolinski said it wasn’t immediately clear if residents in the area would have any loss of water service or if the city would have to issue any type of boil water instructions, but the city would notify residents if that becomes the case.
