Happy hikers can help collect 2,022 Michigander miles and get the new year off to an outdoorsy start by joining the national First Day Hikes program, hosted by America’s State Parks.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources urged Michigan residents to hike, cross-country ski, bike, or snowshoe any state park trail on Jan. 1 and add their miles to the state’s tally. The DNR hopes to report 2,022 miles wandered in Michigan woods as part of the program.

Participants can register to take part and to receive reminder texts about the event at michigan.gov/dnr by searching for First Day Hikes.

During the 2020 First Day Hikes, 85,000 people nationwide burned calories equal to 41,000 fast food hamburgers, according to America’s State Parks.
