Last month’s temps didn’t veer too far from normal

ALPENA -- After Northeast Michigan experienced the second warmest October on record, the region did not come close to breaking any records last month.
Aside from a high of 67 degrees on Nov. 7, and a low of 8 degrees on Nov. 27, temperatures for the rest of the month stayed almost exactly in line with the historical averages.
The average high was 44.5 degrees, compared to the historical average of 44.6 degrees and the average low was 28.2 degrees, compared to the historical average of 28.6 degrees.
The total average temperature in November was 36.3 degrees and the historical normal temperature is 36.6 degrees, making it only .03 degrees colder than normal.
The only significant difference from historical averages was in precipitation. The Alpena area measured a sum of 1.02 inches in precipitation in November as opposed to a historical average of 2.07 inches.
National Weather Service Meteorologist in Gaylord Sabrina Jauernic said the November record high temperature for Northeast Michigan was 77 degrees in 1950 and again in 2020. The low on record was -6 in 1995.
"Last month Alpena had near normal temperatures and got seven inches of snow, which is well below the record of 34.8 inches for November which occurred in 1995," Jauernic said.
"Normal high temperatures ranged from about 50 degrees at the beginning of the month to 39 degrees at the end. Normal lows fell from freezing at the start, to about 25 degrees at the end," she said.
Ryan Proulx, fishing with his friend Tyson Tinker at the 9th Street Dam Wednesday afternoon, was not bothered by the 37-degree temperature or the slight snow flurries that fell off and on. They were dressed for the weather and they did not have to cut through ice to fish, yet.
"Salmon and trout is what we are fishing for," Proulx said. "There are some here."
"It's not too cold to be out here," Tinker said.
The two friends enjoyed Wednesday's weather, but it could change in a hurry.
"The cold wind will roll in today with a possibility for a few rounds of lake effect snow," Jauernic said.
The wind is expected to be 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
Jauernic said there is potential for a winter storm to hit Alpena late Sunday night into Monday morning, depending on if the system moves north or south. The chance of rain and snow showers continue through the middle of next week depending on the temperature, according to The National Weather Service.
