ALPENA — Landowners with property in Northeast Michigan can apply now for grants of up to $2,000 to improve deer habitat on their land.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Alpena-Montmorency Conservation District offer the grant in counties where officials have detected bovine tuberculosis.

Landowners in Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Presque Isle, and Oscoda counties have until Feb. 14 to request grants between $500 and $2,500 for projects such as food plots and tree plantings. Applications are available at alpenamontcd.org.

The Deer Habitat Improvement Program is funded though the Deer Range Improvement Program Fund, which comes from $1.50 collected from every deer hunting license sold in Michigan.
