Hillman-Atlanta schools partnership may change in the future

HILLMAN -- The partnership between Hillman Community Schools and Atlanta Community Schools could look very different in the future due to changes in leadership.
Carl Seiter -- who has served a dual role as superintendent for both districts since 2017 -- said he is leaving the area next month to return to his family in Farwell.
He explained that it saddens him to leave, especially in the middle of a school year, but the mental struggle of being away from his family any longer is more than he can bear.
Seiter's resignation leaves both districts in need of interim superintendents for the remainder of the school year. Going forward, some board members expressed some doubt about whether the dual superintendent role benefits both districts.
This has been an ongoing issue for these two school districts for some time, Jack Matthias, vice president of the Hillman board, said.
Last school year, Hillman enrolled 445 students and Atlanta enrolled 233. Issues like enrollment and demographics factor into whether or not a dual superintendent may be needed, board members said.
The Hillman board had two applicants for interim superintendent and on Monday chose Pamela Rader, principal of Hillman Elementary School.
The board decided hiring her for the interim position would help to ensure a smooth, middle-of-the-year transition, and keep its budget closer to where it is currently.
Rader will receive a $15,000 compensation increase.
Amy Corbin, president of the Atlanta school board, said Atlanta would like to go back to a dual superintendent for both districts. In the meantime, Atlanta will have its own interim superintendent for the remainder of the year and discuss that position at a meeting on Nov. 22.
