APS bus drivers donate to Boys and Girls Club of Alpena

ALPENA -- Alpena Public Schools bus drivers donated $1,744.44 to the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena Friday.
The check was presented to Bradley Somers, executive director of The Boys and Girls Club. Somers said the partnership between the bus drivers and The Boys and Girls Club is a "very special one."
"The impact that bus drivers have on students could make the difference between a good day or a bad day for the kids," Somers said. "Bus drivers are a very important part of the kids and their family's lives, as well as the entire community."
The money was originally raised to purchase "Buster the Bus," an interactive learning tool to teach children bus safety and etiquette, bus driver Sue Buczkowski said.
Sharon Bisanz, secretary at the Alpena Public Schools Transportation Department said that for 25 years Buster taught and entertained children at the mall during the annual "Back to School Event."
Most of the bus drivers involved in the original purchase have retired, said bus driver Kathy Medeiros. Buczkowski and fellow drivers Cyndi Lahaie, and Rebecca Kieliszewski said that there was money left over from years ago when "Buster" was purchased. They had a meeting to decide where to donate the unallocated money and chose the Boys and Girls Club.
