Trick-or-treating plans set for Halloween weekend

ALPENA — Princesses, clowns and Ghostbusters beware! Trick-or-treating events are happening in Alpena and the surrounding communities this weekend, culminating with trick-or-treating on Halloween, which falls on Sunday this year.
Drivers are urged to be cautious this weekend and take extra care to watch out for children, teens, and adults in costumes walking around the neighborhoods.
Friday fun
Come trick-or-treating in Downtown Alpena at participating stores and businesses from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Participating businesses include: Holiday Inn Express, Bluebird Boutique, Bob’s Bullpen, Muddy Paws, Regalo Luxury Gifts, Real Estate One, Shear Envy, Sweet Baby James, Local Basket Case, Cabin Creek Coffee, The Style Wherehouse, Downtown Scoops, Biggby Coffee, Rusty Petunias Marketplace, and Parallel 45 Books & Gifts. Dress in your favorite costume and join other community members in this fun downtown event, open to everyone.
A Trunk-or-Treat will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, in the parking lot behind City Hall in Alpena, organized by the Michigan State Police. Previously printed information listed the wrong date because of incorrect information given to The News.
Saturday festivities
The Thunder Bay River Costume Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday morning at the Alpena County Fairgrounds to benefit the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative. Registration for the 1-mile and 5k events starts at 8 a.m. in the Merchant’s Building. The 1-mile Run/Walk will start at 9:30 a.m. and the 5k will start at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for best kid and best adult costumes, along with a prize for best Great Lakes-themed costume. Candy stations will be set up along both the 1-mile and 5k courses for kids to get candy. Costumes are not required to participate, but are highly encouraged.
Also on Saturday, fall family fun is on the menu in downtown Lincoln, with festivities starting at 11 a.m. A business chili and soup cookoff will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 2nd Street in Lincoln. Also starting at 11 a.m. is “Trick or Trunk” on 2nd Street in Lincoln. Bring your vehicle by 10 a.m. to set up and decorate your trunk. A prize will be awarded for best decorated trunk. A pet costume contest will take place from 12:30 to 12:45. Enjoy the fall decorated downtown windows of businesses. Winners will be announced at the event.
The Fresh Palate is hosting its annual Zombie Crawl from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday night. Hunt zombies, take selfies and find items on a spooky hayride scavenger hunt. This event is for adults only. Bring a team of two or more of your best-dressed friends for a chance to win $250 in gift certificates. Check in is at 6 p.m.

City police officers will hand out glow sticks in Alpena while on patrol during the trick-or-treat hours, when two extra patrol officers will be on duty, according to Lt. Eric Hamp of the Alpena Police Department.
The Curtis Township Library in Glennie will have a drive-thru Halloween party from 5 to 7 p.m., with candy and prizes.
The Alpena Pumpkin House will once again be lit up for one night only, on Ferncliff Drive, featuring over 100 intricately carved pumpkins. This display will be set up from 5 p.m. to midnight on Halloween only. Organizers hand-carve pumpkins for five days straight with family and friends so the community can enjoy this free display.
