ALPENA — Firefighters from Alpena Township likely got a good night’s sleep on Tuesday, after responding to a pair of structure fires.

The second fire on Michigan Avenue, was called into 911 just before 6 p.m., and required mutual aid from the Alpena Fire Department. The intensity of the blaze caused smoke to billow well above the small house and fill the air for many blocks. The smoke and soot looked like fog on nearby streets.

Police blocked off access to Michigan Avenue, but onlookers used the parking lots of nearby businesses to watch the fire and the battle to put it out.

Earlier on Tuesday, Alpena Township firefighters responded to a structure fire about 1 p.m. on Long Rapids Road, where the gas meter on the house was on fire, and had spread to the front porch area.

Michigan State Police troopers and Alpena County Sheriff Deputies closed the road to let the fire crews battle the blaze. Troopers also went door-to-door to nearby homes, but a mandatory evacuation was not ordered.

About 45 minutes into the blaze, DTE Energy arrived at the scene to shut off the flow of gas to the home and the firefighters extinguished the remaining flames.
