ALPENA — It appears the largest beer festival in Northeast Michigan is a go — if the Alpena Municipal Council signs off on the request to close several streets downtown.
The Sunrise Suds Tap Takeover is slated to be held on Oct. 2, from noon until midnight, but in order to move forward with the festival, Second Avenue — from Chisholm Street to Water Street — will need to be closed to accommodate the beer tents, and stage area for the live entertainment.
The council has approved the event and road closures since its inception and issue is on the council’s consent agenda Tuesday.
The Sunrise Suds Tap Takeover is held in downtown Alpena and features a selection of craft beers and ciders from more than 32 breweries for people to sample. It also includes live music from some of Michigan’s most promising musicians and bands, as well as street performers with various talents.
Food will also be available from local vendors.
Fresh Palate owner Eric Peterson, who made the request to the city to move forward with the event, said in his application to the city that the festival provides a means for people to gather and have fun, and to showcase brewing talent from all over the state.
“The purpose of the event is to bring the community together in celebration,” he wrote.
More information on the event will be released after council signs off on the event.
