Youthful Vikings ready to compete and grow in 2021

News Photo by Jonny Zawacki The Posen football team has its eye on growth and improvement this season after going 2-4 in 2020. The Vikings have made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons and coach Greg Pietsch is excited by the potential of his young team.

POSEN — The spirits are high this year for the Posen football team despite suffering a losing season after a pair of winning seasons.

This Vikings team features plenty of youth. Despite expectations not being as high in previous years, coach Greg Pietsch is looking forward to watching this year’s group compete and grow during the season.

“We don’t have any superstars on this team, all of these guys are close and unselfish. These kids play together well as a group and I think we’ll be competitive this year,” Pietsch said. “We’re young, but the kids that are coming into high school have plenty of football experience from our youth program so I’m excited for this group.”

Jack Romel and Cole Krajniak will be a pair of key players this year for the Vikings.

Romel is a sophomore quarterback and Krajniak is a junior wide receiver that may also see time running the offense at quarterback.

Ethan Soik and Joey Konieczny are two returning senior starters.

The Vikings have a group of talented freshmen that will be thrust into playing time. Eli Choknacki, John Ennis, and Tristan Smith make up a trio that may lack experience at the high school level, but are comfortable playing alongside each other and have had success at the youth level.

Logan Timm and Ethan Romel are a pair of sophomores that will also see solid playing time throughout the season.

Ethan Purol and Lucas Mercier are two juniors that are solid players that will provide experience and leadership this season.

“We have a lot of good players that have a lot of potential. There is a ton of young talent here and I’m excited to see these young players grow,” Pietsch said. “There’s plenty of competition and we are two deep at every position. All of these kids can play football and are good athletes, they are fun to coach and it’s fun to work with them and watch them grow from the youth program to now at the high school level. It’s going to be an exciting year for us and I’m looking forward to watching us compete and grow as a football team, a program and as individuals.”
