ALPENA — Construction will delay the start of the school year for Ella White Elementary students, the school announced Friday.

Students will return to their classrooms on Sept. 13, eight school days after school begins on Aug. 30 for the remainder of Alpena Public Schools campuses, according to a news release from the school.

Unexpected disruptions to the production and delivery of materials have slowed construction projects on the school campus, necessitating the delay, the news release said.

School leadership expects to allow teachers into the building by Sept. 7 to prepare their classrooms. Students will be invited to an open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 9.

Regular lessons will not begin before Sept. 13, including virtually, but teachers will interact with students and engage in some beginning-of-school routines via emails, phone calls, or other methods in the interim, according to David Rabbideau, superintendent of Alpena Public Schools.

Students will not have to make up the eight instruction days missed because of the delayed start, Rabbideau said.
