Alpena Public Schools, Aldi prepare to move forward

ALPENA -- A deal that would bring an Aldi grocery store to Alpena would continue, if the Alpena Public Schools Board of Education approves an amendment to its purchase agreement later this month.
The APS Board of Education's Property Committee learned on Friday that developer Vautgrand Holdings wishes to move forward with the project, where it would build a new $1.5 million bus garage for the district in exchange for the property at 1357 M-32 West, where the district's bus garage is currently located.
Under the original project, the developer was supposed to pay $1 million to build a new bus garage for the district, which would come at no cost to the district. However, district officials were notified in June the cost of the project increased by a little over $500,000 and the developer asked district officials to pay the additional costs.
District officials were ready to walk away from the deal, but the board instructed Superintendent Dave Rabbideau to allow the developer time to make a counter offer.
Meanwhile, Vautgrand Holdings decided to move forward with the project.
"The facility deal is moving forward with the original terms of no cost to the district and then building this facility to our liking," Superintendent Rabbideau said. "This third amendment spells out some details that are kind of interesting and exciting."
If the board of education approves the deal, construction on the new bus garage would begin sometime between Oct. 1 and Nov. 15.
