Alpena Figure Skating Club holds summer skating camp

Courtesy Photo The Alpena Figure Skating Club held its first ever summer skating camp Aug. 2-6. The camp had 20 skaters in attendance. The skating camp was sponsored by the Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Grant, the Besser Foundation, and the First Federal Legacy Fund. With the community support through these grants, the camp was kept at a very reasonable cost to skaters. During the camp skaters worked on skating techniques, on and off-ice choreography, group routines, and off-ice skills such as skate care, stretching, jumps, spins, and skating crafts. The week culminated with a small exhibition for family and friends. During the exhibition skaters performed group routines learned during the camp and also solos that the freestyle skaters choreographed during the week. Registration for the upcoming figure skating season will be held Sept. 20 and 23 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Northern Lights Arena. Skaters can also try figure skating for free on Monday, Sept. 20 from 6-7 p.m. For questions about the Alpena Figure Skating Club, please email the alpenafigureskatingclub@gmail.com or find the club on Facebook.
