MLK Committee donates books to APS elementary schools

Rev. Bill McClure of Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Committee of Northeast Michigan, hands Besser Elementary School Principal Stephanie Hitchcock on Thursday a tote bag filled with a selection of books to diversify the reading available to students in first through fifth grades.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Committee for Northeast Michigan donated a total of 120 books to elementary schools in the Alpena Public Schools district. The committee learned books could be a little more diverse in the school district when it invited storyteller La'Ron Williams for an assembly.

The committee will also be distributing 20 books to a local homeschool group.

Funding for the books came from the Rotary Club of Alpena, Art in the Loft, Working for Justice, and Trinity Episcopal Church Women.
