PREP ROUNDUP: Alpena baseball team tops Gaylord; Hillman clinches division

Alpena tops Gaylord in BNC twinbill

ALPENA–The Alpena baseball team picked up a pair of Big North Conference wins on Thursday, topping Gaylord 11-10 and 5-2.

In the opener, a two-run double from Matt Thompson gave Alpena the walkoff win in seven innings. The Wildcats had previously scored six runs in the sixth inning.

Thompson and Travis Weide each had two hits and three RBI and Jake Zann had two hits.

In the nightcap, Alpena scored twice in the third inning and three times in the fourth, limiting Gaylord to a run in the first and fourth innings.

Thompson and Weide each had two hits and an RBI. Zann earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Hillman clinches division title

The Hillman baseball team clinched the North Star League’s Little Dipper division on Thursday, routing Au Gres 16-1 and 15-3.

In the opener, Jaden Dove earned the win, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

At the plate, Sean Henigan had a double, scored twice and had two RBI for the Tigers (16-9-1, 6-0 NSL); Braylon Firman had a double and two RBI; Edwin Hardies was 1-for-1; Aden Sobeck was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored and Dove was 1-for-2 with three runs scored.

In the second game, AJ Jones, Brady Firman and Trenton Taratuta split pitching duties, combining for 13 strikeouts and two walks.

Sobeck was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI; Caleb Hiveley was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI; Brady Firman was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored; Henigan was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored; Taratuta was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Dove was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Hillman hosts Johannesburg-Lewiston on Friday.

Alcona tops Cardinals

LINCOLN–The Alcona baseball team continued its winning ways on Thursday, beating Whittemore-Prescott 13-2 and 12-11 in a pair of five-inning games.

In the opener, Zach Stephenson earned the win for the Tigers (9-6). At the plate, Jakob Tanner was 2-for-3 with a home run and Stephenson was 2-for-3 with a double.

Stephenson also picked up the win in the nightcap. Gavin Walker was 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park grand slam; Tanner was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double; Collin Walker was 2-for-2 and Chris Barnes was 2-for-2. Nathan Nardi had a walk-off base hit and give Alcona the sweep.

SOFTBALL

Posen sweeps Alcona

LINCOLN–The Posen softball team took a doubleheader from Alcona on Wednesday, winning 8-7 and 12-7.

Alcona led 7-4 after five innings in the first game, but Posen rallied with four runs in the sixth to win. Ava Wesner gad three hits and three RBI for Posen; Shelby Donajowski had two hits and two RBI and Faith Cousins had two hits. Makayla Kamyszek pitched a complete game for the win, walking two and striking out six.

Olivia Borchardt led Alcona with three hits.

Alcona led 7-3 after three and a half innings in the nightcap, but Posen pulled ahead with six runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth.

Donajkowski led Posen with four hits and an RBI; Kamyszek and Abi Schellie each had three hits and three RBI; Cousins added three hits. Lizzy Romel went the distance for Posen, striking out four and walking four.

Sage Gauthier, Borchardt and Rachel Layton each had two hits for Alcona.

JV BASEBALL

Alpena takes 2 from Gaylord

GAYLORD–The Alpena JV baseball team took a pair of games from Gaylord on Thursday, 10-0 and 9-6.

In the opener, Jon Rensberry and Kaleb Donajkowski combined to throw a one-hit shutout, combining for three walks and six strikeouts.

Alpena had just three hits, but took advantage of four Gaylord errors. Marc Kirchner had a double and two RBI and Brady Pagels and Gabe Glawe each had a hit.

In the second game, Kirchner led Alpena with four hits and three RBI and Pagels had two RBI.
