ALPENA -- The Alpena baseball team came out a winner on Saturday in its annual Mackenzie Invitational.
Alpena opened the day with a 12-2 victory over Sault Ste. Marie and followed up with a 6-4 win over Ogemaw Heights.
Travis Weide swung a hot bat for Alpena in the opener, finishing with three hits and four RBI. Weide had an RBI single in the first inning, a two-run double in the third inning and an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Alpena trailed 2-1 early, but took control of the game with two runs in the third, five in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Jake Zann had a pair of hits and four RBI for Alpena and Keegan Hahn and Matt Thompson each had two hits and an RBI.
Hahn earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and a walk in four innings.
Alpena trailed 4-3 after four and a half innings in the nightcap, but took control with a three-run fifth inning. Zann had an RBI double, Logan Momrik had an RBI single and Ryan Lee scored Zann on a sac fly.
Weide, Zann, Hahn and Matt Thompson each had two hits for the Wildcats. Thompson and Momrik split time on the mound, striking out six, walking three and allowing seven hits. Momrik earned the win after three innings of work.
Alpena (4-7) plays at Traverse City West on Tuesday.

Alpena hosts annual
tournament
ALPENA -- The Alpena girls soccer team hosted its annual Sunrise Side Soccer Challenge Cup tournament on Saturday, hosting Marine City Cardinal Mooney and Royal Oak Shrine.
Alpena opened the tournament with a 5-3 loss to Cardinal Mooney, Shrine beat Mooney 5-0 and then defeated Alpena 1-0 to win the tournament.

ALPENA -- The Alpena softball team hosted a three-team tournament on Saturday, hosting Garden City and Grand Blanc.
Grand Blanc topped Garden City 12-0 in the opening game; Grand Blanc also went on to defeat Alpena 13-2 later in the day.
