LINCOLN — Sick of the coronavirus pandemic, Alcona High School’s Class of 2021 looked to the future at its graduation Friday in the high school’s football stadium.

Valedictorians Gabriel Froehner and Hunter Winter addressed their peers, and thanked their teachers, and their parents for success. Froehner talked to his fellow graduates about ambition while Winter focused on the importance of this time in their lives.

Winter said while they all succeeded in high school, they need to keep their work ethic, because if they focus too much of their time on things that don’t matter, they could lose their chance for success.

“As you all execute your after high school plans, I pray that you will do so with vigor, wisdom, truth, and prudence,” he said. “I wish everyone here (well) and hope to see you around in the community doing great things.”

Class President Zachary Stephenson also addressed his peers, thanking them one last time for the countless memories and experiences they’ve had over the years.

Because the weather was colder, administrators tried to keep the ceremony brief. Superintendent Dan O’Connor and High School/Middle School Principal Christie Thomas welcomed the graduates, their parents, and family members to commencement.

Academic Counselor Megan Van Koningsveld introduced the graduates enrolled in Early College, who will be enrolled with the district for a fifth year while earning a certificate or associate degree from Alpena Community College.

A total of 51 graduates were handed their diploma covers by Alcona Community Schools Board of Education President Gary Sims.

As they made their way off the stage, graduates bumped fists with their teachers and were congratulated by members of the school board and district administrators. Parents — each graduates’ biggest fan — applauded and cheered as they turned their tassels.
