Wildcats honored by Big North Conference

ALPENA — Several Alpena High School athletes were recently honored for by the Big North Conference for their achievements during the 2021 winter season.

In girls basketball, Allie DeRocher earned first team all-conference honors. DeRocher averaged 10.3 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season.

Allie Urlaub earned an honorable mention after averaging 5.5 points and 1.3 steals.

In boys basketball, Cooper Bright was named a BNC first-teamer and Mason Mumford earned an honorable mention. Bright averaged better than 18 points per game this season for the Wildcats and nearly eight rebounds per game.

In hockey, Blaise Keller was named to the BNC second team and Collin Lightfoot, Anden Marceau, Evan Kraenzlein and Jack Steinke all earned honorable mentions.

Keller recorded five goals and eight assists during the regular season and Marceau led the team in points with 12 goals and two assists. Both of them scored a pair of goals in Alpena’s regional final win over Gaylord.

In net, Lightfoot appeared in 10 games during the regular season and was in net during Alpena’s playoff wins over Sault. Ste. Marie and Gaylord.

Kraenzlein recorded five points during the season and Steinke recorded four points.

Several Onaway players also earned all-Ski Valley Conference honors for the 2021 season.

Senior guard Kevin Pearson, a four-year varsity player, earned a spot on the All-Ski Valley Conference first team after averaging 20.2 points per game, 5.8 rebounds and 6.4 steals.

Junior center Jager Mix was also named a first-teamer and averaged 18.1 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

Onaway senior Spencer Nash earned an honorable mention.

On the girls side, Taylor Larson and Breya Domke earned second-team All-Ski Valley honors and Nicole Larson earned an honorable mention.
