Officials report 37 new infections in Northeast Michigan

ALPENA — Public health officials on Wednesday reported 37 newly infected or probably infected Northeast Michiganders, including 19 Alpena County residents, 12 Presque Isle County residents, and six Montmorency County residents.

As of Feb. 18, local public health agencies have reported confirmed and suspected infections as one number.

Based on that data, 3,239 Northeast Michiganders have been confirmed or suspected infected since the pandemic hit Michigan in mid-March. Of those, 106 have died.

State data showed that, as of Wednesday, 36,495 doses of coronavirus vaccine had been administered in Northeast Michigan.

As of Monday, two people were hospitalized at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena with coronavirus infection, none were in intensive care, according to state data. The hospital was 51% full.

As of, 87 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection across the state-designated, 18-county health care region that includes Alpena, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties, according to state data.

The last death was reported on March 19.

Local public health officials have stopped tracking recoveries.

Who’s currently eligible to receive the vaccine?

Those 50 and older, those 18 and older with disabilities or certain medical conditions, health care workers, police, firefighters, teachers and child care workers, some food and agriculture workers, utilities or critical manufacturing workers, public transit workers, grocery store workers, U.S. Postal Service workers, and certain other workers with unique skill sets not covered above. Prioritization for those 50 to 65 will be given to those with certain medical conditions and caregivers of people with special health care needs.
