Public helps police nab fugitive

James Gross at videoconferenced sentencing

A fugitive wanted by police after he failed to report to jail has been captured, the Michigan State Police reported Friday.

Police arrested James Gross, of Lincoln, with the help of an anonymous tipster who called Northeast Michigan Crime Stoppers after seeing a news report that Gross was wanted by police. The fugitive was found hiding in a home in Oscoda, police reported.

In early March, Gross was sentenced via videoconference to 66 months in prison for sexually assaulting a child in Crawford County. He was ordered to turn himself in by the end of the day, but failed to appear.

A news release about the missing man, shared in local media on Thursday, prompted the tip that led to Gross’s discovery and arrest.
