New Alpena Fire Department firefighters train at the Alpena Public Safety Building on Monday. Sworn in to their new posts in January, new full-time city firefighters Kevin Galloway, Cain Makowski, Bruce Honeycutt, and Ken Piper spent Monday tearing apart a damaged fire department vehicle, destined for scrap, as part of training intended to acclimate them to the city's procedures and tools, according to Rob Edmonds, training officer for the department. In addition to vehicle extrication and stabilization, the day's training included sessions on fire response, "mayday procedure," and breathing apparatuses. The city's new firefighters will train on emergency medical response skills next week. Before being employed with the city, Piper and Honeycutt worked for the Alpena Township Fire Department as full-time firefighters. Galloway also worked for the township as a paid-on-call employee, and Makowski worked as a paid-on-call member of the Presque Isle Fire Department.
