ALPENA -- After a long winter hibernation of sorts, Art in the Loft is reawakening with a soft reopening today.
In a normal, non-pandemic year, WinterView would have been open all winter long, but this year is a bit different. A Limited WinterView opens today and runs through Saturday, April 3. Current gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Masks are required in the Center Building.
WinterView will feature 20 local artists this year, as opposed to 35 to 40 Michigan artists in previous years, Art in the Loft Executive Director Justin Christensen-Cooper said on Friday.
"We set up for WinterView to open prior to Thanksgiving," he said. "So, at that point, we already had about half of our artists set up and ready to go. The rest were going to wait to see what was going on, given the new restrictions. So everybody that is up here right now is relatively local."
All the art on display is also for sale.
"We didn't do a jury to get into this show," Christensen-Cooper explained. "So, it's all artists that have been up here before, but a lot of them have brand-new stuff that people haven't seen, because it's been up here since November, and we haven't been open."
Throughout the pandemic, Art in the Loft has offered take-home art and cooking kits for kids as well as virtual classes for all ages. Those will continue throughout March and April. Check the Art in the Loft Facebook page and artintheloft.org for updates and details.
"They can still sign up for all of those, right through the website, and then we have a series of pickup days that they can come get them," he said of the take-home kits. Scholarships are also available.
After a hiatus caused by the pandemic last year, the Young Artist Exhibit will be held from April 15 to May 15. This year, a public call for art is being held. Local young artists are welcome to submit their work.
The "grand reopening" will begin with SummerView 2021, set for May 27 to August 28. During that time, the Loft will extend its hours to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and opens at noon Sunday.
