ALPENA — Local public health officials on Wednesday announced two new walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinics as the number of infections in Northeast Michigan doubled from the figures reported on Tuesday.

Vaccinations for essential workers in tourism and hospitality industries, including restaurant workers, will be available from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alpena Mall and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at St. Francis Church in Lewiston.

No appointment is needed to attend the vaccination clinic but vaccines will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. There are 200 spaces available as part of the Alpena walk-in clinic and 150 spaces available as part of the Lewiston walk-in clinic.

Anyone already registered for the clinic will still receive their vaccine at the scheduled time, according to health officials.

Hospitality and tourism workers were added to the eligibility list in recognition that northern counties are entering the tourism season, according to Cathy Goike, health education specialist for District Health Department No. 4.

Meanwhile COVID-19 infections increased on Wednesday.

Public health officials on Wednesday reported 24 newly infected or probably infected Northeast Michiganders, including nine Alpena County residents, nine Presque Isle County residents, two Montmorency County residents, and four Alcona County residents.

As of Feb. 18, local public health agencies have reported confirmed and suspected infections as one number.

Based on that data, 3,101Northeast Michiganders have been confirmed or suspected infected since the pandemic hit Michigan in mid-March. Of those, 106 have died.

State data showed that, as of Tuesday, 32,762 doses of coronavirus vaccine had been administered in Northeast Michigan.

As of Monday, no one was hospitalized at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena with coronavirus infection, including in intensive care, according to state data. The hospital was 36% full.

As of Wednesday, 65 people were hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection across the state-designated, 18-county health care region that includes Alpena, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties, according to state data.

The last death was reported Friday.

Local public health officials have stopped tracking recoveries.

Who’s currently eligible to receive the vaccine?

Those 50 and older, health care workers, police, firefighters, teachers and child care workers, some food and agriculture workers, utilities or critical manufacturing workers, public transit workers, grocery store workers, U.S. Postal Service workers, and certain other workers with unique skill sets not covered above. Prioritization for those 50 to 65 will be given to those with certain medical conditions and caregivers of people with special health care needs.
