Local school board ROUNDUP: Alpena school board joins vaping lawsuit

Recent actions by boards of education in Northeast Michigan.

∫ The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education voted six-to-one to join the lawsuit against the vaping company Juul and other vaping manufacturers for marketing electronic cigarettes to students.

Trustee Eric Lawson cast the dissenting vote, saying he wanted more information on the lawsuit. He said the lawsuit casted a wide net, and he wanted to know which other companies were being sued because he was afraid they may be suing manufacturers who haven’t done anything wrong.

Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Meaghan Gauthier said disciplining students caught with vaping devices involves a lot of administrative costs.

Superintendent Dave Rabbideau also said vaping prevention campaigns or training employees about vaping also costs money. It would also cost money to purchase vaping detectors.

Trustee Steven Donajkowski asked district administrators to put together an estimate of those costs within the next month or so.

The Alpena school board also agreed to allow the City of Alpena to collect the district’s summer property taxes. The city will charge the district a collection fee of $0.8356 per parcel. Associate Superintendent for Business and Operations Mary Lyon said there are 5,418 parcels in the city, so the bill to the school district will be $4,527.

The board also elected Donajkowski as its treasurer and accepted a $1,010 donation to the Alpena High School Caring Closet from Paul Sabourin. The donation came from proceeds of the August Three Par Shootout.

∫ The Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education earlier this month named Amy Corbin board president, Cody Stevens vice president, Doris Smith secretary, and Pam Parsons treasurer.

Jessica Kent was appointed to fill a vacancy on the school board, with the seat to expire on Dec. 31, 2022.
