ALPENA — Stop signs are being considered at the intersection of Miller Street and North 2nd Avenue, where residents have raised concerns about safety.

The Alpena Municipal Council on Tuesday sought more information from city officials and will consider the issue again on Feb. 15.

Alpena Police Chief Joel Jett detailed 27 crashes at the intersection in the past decade, evenly split between those occurring while the intersection was controlled by a standard three-light stoplight and those that happened after the signal was changed to a flashing yellow light in 2016.

Some residents have been especially concerned for the safety of parents and students at All Saints Catholic School, which is adjacent to the intersection.

The council has been presented with several options for the intersection, including installing stop signs, reverting to a three-color stoplight, or making no change.

Council members asked city staff to gather more information about a possible next step, including about the pros and cons of a four-way stop or a two-stop at that intersection, before the Feb. 15 Municipal Council meeting.
