Grant to help fight repeat overdoses

A hefty chunk of money will give Northeast Michiganders who have survived a drug overdose a helping hand in preventing a second overdose.

Catholic Human Services, with an office in Alpena, was announced last week as one of seven Michigan recipients of grants totalling over $1 million. The funds will be used to form post-overdose rapid response teams who will contact and visit overdose survivors within 24 to 72 hours.

That window is a critical time in which to engage people who use drugs and connect them with resources to prevent a repeated overdose, according to the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, one of the grants’ sponsors.

In the next nine months, Catholic Human Services will use the almost $200,000 grant to form response teams including emergency responders, medical professionals, law enforcement, peer recovery coaches, and the faith community to respond to overdoses or suspected overdoses, according to Kara Steinke, Catholic Human Services regional administrator.
