Local school board Roundup: AMA ESD trustee resigns

Recent actions by school boards in Northeast Michigan:

∫ The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education accepted the resignation of Trustee Richard Matteson. The board will interview candidates for the vacant seat during its next board meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday.

Superintendent Scott Reynolds said Matteson has been a fixture in the educational community for decades and is a former teacher and board member for Alpena Public Schools and is a former instructor at Alpena Community College.

“He’s a man who is very passionate about education, has a love for children and learning, and has a great admiration and respect for our staff,” Reynolds said. “We’re very sad to see him go but he has our full support and we can only wish him the best in support of his health.”

In his report to the board, Reynolds informed the board the district had a good bus inspection, overall. A yellow tag was received on one of the 12 buses because the rear wheel seal was leaking, but Reynolds said it has since been corrected.

∫ The Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education accepted the resignation of board member-elect Jenna Kuznicki during a special meeting on Nov. 23 and is now accepting applications from those interested in serving on the board. Applications are being accepted through 3 p.m. Tuesday, with interviews to occur on Dec. 14.

The board appointed Karen Spens to the board. Spens was formally sworn in during the board’s Nov. 9 meeting. The seat became available after former board President Devin Pommerenke resigned in October.

The board on Nov. 9 accepted an audit for 2019-20 fiscal year from Straley, Ilsley, and Kraenzelin. During the meeting, accountant Philip Straley said the district has enough cash to cover 13% of annual expenses and that the district was fortunate in receiving an $180,000 COVID-19 relief grant.

The board agreed that teachers Mariah Lloyd and Victoria Kerr will share the afterschool teaching position at the middle and high schools for the 2020-21 school year. The board also hired Chase McLennan as the varsity wrestling coach, Greta Grambau as the junior varsity girls basketball coach, and Katy VanHook as girls basketball volunteer, pending the completion of a background check.

∫ Posen Consolidated Schools will pay $10,896 for a new technology server and access points, according to the board’s minutes. The district’s current server is not able to handle the influx of computer usage and crashes. Those crashes result in a lot of downtime for students and staff, as the new way of teaching involves using the internet.

District officials also plan to purchase a new school bus soon. The 2013 buses the district currently own are in need of repair. District officials will look into buying a gas-powered bus instead of diesel.

District officials were informed the district’s annual audit will be conducted virtually by Doug Wohlberg, of the Byron Center-based accounting firm Wohlberg CPA, this year.
